Men’s Basketball League Rules

Please read and review the following rules for the 2009 Men’s Basketball League.

This year we will be fielding eight teams.  This means more players, more competiveness and more fun.  Below are the rules and structure of this year’s season.  Please remember that this is a church (God’s House) and we require that you respect that and follow the rules of this league.

General

  • There will be eight teams this year with the following game times:
    • 6:15-7:15 p.m.
    • 7:15-8:15 p.m.
    • 8:30-9:30 p.m.
    • 9:30-10:30 p.m.
  • There will be a two week pre-season followed by a 12-week regular season that finishes with two week post season playoffs with single elimination format.
  • We ask that you commit to playing the entire season.  This is only fair to your team.  If there is something in your schedule that will create a conflict, please inform us when you sign up.
  • The league fee is $95 per player.  $20.00 is refundable at the end of the season when you return your basketball jersey.

Open Gym/Pre-season

  • For individual assessments, you will be assigned to come out and play pick-up ball on one of the first three Monday’s in January.
  • Coaches will take your picture and evaluate your skill level and position.
  • After the three weeks of assessments, coaches will make teams as equal as possible, based on skill level, position and chemistry between players.
  • You will be notified what team you are on by your coach before the fourth week in January.
  • Starting January 26th we will have two weeks of pre-season games. These games are shorter and do not have referees.  This allows the coaches to assess the chemistry of the teams and allows the teams to get a feel for each other.

 Game/League Rules

  • Games will consist of two 20-minute halves.  The clock will run continuously, except for time-outs and the last two minutes of each half, during which the clock will stop at each whistle.
  • There will be a five minute “warm-up” period before the game and three minutes during half-time.
  • Each team is allowed two time-outs per half, no carry over.
  • Teams must submit lineups (including first and last names of players and their jersey numbers) to the scorekeeper at least five minutes prior to game time.
  • Overtime will consist of three minutes with the clock stopping only at the whistle during the last minute.  One timeout is given during overtime.
  • Foul Shots:
    • Bonus will take affect on the seventh foul in each half.
    • Intentional foul – two (2) free throws and possession of the ball at the spot nearest the foul.
    • Technical foul – two (2) free throws and possessions of the ball at the mid court.
    • On and after the tenth (10) foul in each half, the fouled team will shoot two (2) free throws.
    • In a free throw situation, rebounders must wait until the shooter releases the ball before they enter the lane.
  • Each player must wear the same color jersey as the other teammates with a non-duplicating number
  • Teams will alternate possession in jump ball situations with the exception of the opening tip-off and overtime.
  • Substitutions are allowed on dead ball situations only. Substitutes MUST check in and enter from the scorekeeper’s table.
  • Rosters: There will be eight players per team.  Coaches ONLY have the right to change the roster collectively at their discretion through week three of the regular season. This will be done to ensure the chemistry and the competitiveness stays equal throughout each team.
  • You are required to help with setting up, cleaning up and/or the score table throughout the season.  Failure to volunteer will result in loss of play time during the playoffs.
  • There will be a 28 second shot clock.  The clock will be reset when there is a change in possession and/or a team shoots and the ball hits the rim.
  • Use of profanity, whether directed at someone or not, will result in a technical foul being assessed.  Excessive profanity will lead to a league ejection and loss of league fees.
  • All games will start on time.  Teams must have four players to start the game; the team with four players will play against five players on the opponent’s team.  If at least four players are not present at game time, a forfeit is called and a pick-up game will be played.
  • Players must play in at least 50% of their regular season games to be eligible to play in the playoffs

Post Season

  • All regular season rules apply.
  • There will be two (2) weeks of playoffs. All teams make the playoffs. Week two of the playoffs will consist of the semi-finals and finals.

Unsportsmanlike Conduct:

  • A player who, in the judgement of the official, verbally or physically abuses an official, player, coach, or spectator will be subject to a technical foul.  Technical fouls assessed for unsportsmanlike conduct will be recorded by the official scorekeeper.
  • The following penalties will be assessed for misconduct:
    • If a player is assessed one technical foul (for misconduct), he is ejected for the remainder of the game supporting his team on the bench.  He will then need to contact Steve Jeantet (Sports Minister) via phone or in person prior to playing in the next game.  Steve Jeantet’s phone number is (302) 824-6496.
    • If a player is assessed two technical fouls (for misconduct) in the season, he will be ejected for the remainder of the game and will also miss his next scheduled game.  He is required to come and support his team during his missed week by sitting on the bench.  He will then need to contact Steve Jeantet (Sports Minister) via phone or in person prior to playing in the next game.  Steve Jeantet’s phone number is (302) 824-6496.
    • If a Player is assessed three technical fouls (for misconduct) in the season, he will be suspended for the season.
  • Please remember as stated before, this is a church and as our guest, we ask that you respect others.  Profanity, threats, throwing the ball, yelling at other players, coaches or referees will NOT be tolerated.
    • Sanctions include but are not limited to suspension, expulsion, forfeitures of league fees and/or criminal charges.

Ministry

  • There are many of you who do not go to church for different reasons.  We want this place and this league to be a safe haven where you can be yourself, hear about God’s Word and his awesome love and ask for prayer (anonymously).
    • Between the 7:15 and 8:30 games we ask all who have just played a game and those about to play to come meet at center court for about five to seven minutes to hear different stories from the Bible and how they relate to our day-to-day lives.
  • We all need prayer and we know that everyone probably has a family member or friend who  is struggling with their health,  finances or something else.  So, we will have a prayer box available for anyone who wants to submit  a prayer request.  We do not require that you  identify yourself on the request for prayer.   Just put “Pray for…who is….”  God knows for whom we are praying.

Miscellaneous

  • Only athletic shoes are allowed on the gym floors. Shoes that mark the floor will not be permitted, even if they are athletic shoes.
  • In case of bad weather, please check the church website at http://www.glasgowsports.org to find out the status of games.
