In His Grip – Dr. Chuck F. Betters
Dear Members and Friends of Glasgow Church:
Over the summer months your staff and session have been gearing up for what will prove to be an exciting fall. A master staffing plan is under session review along with a master site plan for the entire 80 plus acres we now own. As you have been regularly made aware, the fall $3 million project will include a variety of needs and Kingdom building projects. Stone’s Throw is off to a great start with 10% growth of NEW people (and not merely transplants from Glasgow) already realized. A team has already visited Nicaragua and they have identified a possible partnership, although that has not yet been firmed up. I could say a lot more about the various “home” projects but young Chuck has been regularly keeping you abreast about that.
What I am most excited about is the transition in staffing that has and is taking place.
- Over the past few weeks we have hired a new Children’s Coordinator in Vicki Mullen. Her first task was to develop a strong Kid’s Church. Already she has made some tremendous inroads. Also, on the drawing board is a retooled Sunday school for your kids in addition to the Kid’s Church during the worship hour. Email Vicki at missvicki@glasgowchurch.com to help out.
- We have hired Brian Cannelongo as our Sports and Recreation Director with Guy Cooper as his intern.
- The position of Woman’s Ministries Coordinator has been created and hopefully soon we will have someone who is qualified in place.
- This past week, the session examined our Business Manager, Scott Winchester, concerning his call to enter into full time pastoral ministry. We have approved his call and will soon send his name on to the Heritage Presbytery to come under care as he completes seminary and prepares for licensure and ordination. This means Scott will make a gradual transition (the timing to be determined with session oversight) out of his role as our Business Manager and into a role where there is a plethora of areas where we need ministerial help. This also means we will be looking for an accountant in the months ahead.
- GCA is actively searching for a school principal to replace Sherry, our interim principal, who will retire after the next school year.
- Our First Touch Ministry is now under the direction of my wife Sharon as a volunteer. The Connections Café is one critical piece of this vital ministry. The pre-worship hour from 9:30 to 10:15 is a great time to introduce your friends, family, and neighbors to others in the church so that they will feel at home when worship begins. Watch for updates on this exciting new ministry. Email Sharon at sharbett@aol.com if you are interested in helping out.
If you would like to apply for any of these positions please forward your resume to Chuck L. Betters at clbetters@glasgowchurch.com.

Meet Me at the Connections Cafe
Connections: (noun) Friends, relatives
Connect: (verb) bond, unite, hook up
Café: (noun) coffee bar
Now here’s a thought! Connect (bond, unite, hook up) with some connections (friends and relatives, new or old) at the café (coffee, flavored syrups, teas, juice and snacks served) from 9:30 – 10:15 on Sunday mornings in the Fellowship Hall (in the Family Life Center).
Connections Café is a relaxing place to start your family (personal and church) worship by cultivating community with your “connections!” It’s an informal way to introduce your “Connections” to your church family and your church. In just three weeks, we have met about fifteen people new to Glasgow Church. And, we have caught up with “old” friends and had conversations that lasted longer than a rushed, “Hey, how ya doin’? Have a great day!” as we scurried into the sanctuary to get a seat and catch our breaths.
So, follow the signs and meet us at Connections Café! Introduce us to your guests or just grab a cup of coffee and sit a while, catch your breath and catch up with an old friend. You’ll be glad you do! Looking forward to seeing you this Sunday – Sharon Betters

Glasgow Christian Academy – Sherry Bitler
We experienced the last day of school this week; the halls are quiet – the bathrooms are still clean at the end of the day – it feels like something is missing. We gave out the awards, shared hugs and tears, and sent our students off to enjoy the summer. We also sent our fantastic teachers off to refresh and regroup for the next school year. This school year has been a remarkable picture of God’s faithfulness and grace. We are basically still a “baby” school – and just like a baby, each year lots of ‘firsts’ happen; this year we added eighth grade, and then graduated them with a challenge to start right now making wise choices (like hanging the first piece of wallpaper just right, so all the remaining pieces will create a lovely decor). We challenged them to wear the whole armor of God and develop character according to God’s Word. We developed a partnership with a Christian high school so that a natural transition from our middle school to their high school is available to our students. This partnership will also make bus service available to some families. These shining students earned high awards – along with their many academic awards, we presented the Servant’s Heart Award to Alaina Creek, Outstanding Christian Character Award to Danielle Nequist, and honors awards to Val Succarotte, Courtney Landers, Anna Bendler, and Danielle Nequist. Danielle was inducted into the Jr. National Honor Society.
This was our first year with a Jr. Honor Society induction; we opened a school store; our first mascot – Pat the Panther was created and visited our soccer games and assemblies. We had a curriculum review committee and we are upgrading our language arts and writing programs. The first advisory council was put into place and we became members of ACSI – Association of Christian Schools International. ACSI offers resources for standardized testing, curriculum, policies and procedures, counsel, benefits to faculty, as well as student participation opportunities such a math and science competitions and music and art competitions.
Every day holds a new adventure! GCA offers top-notch education opportunities for your child. Please consider enrolling your student – preschool, half-day Kindergarten and fourth grade openings are still available. Contact me at (302) 392-1090 or sbitler@gca-de.org.

Dear Members and Friends of Glasgow Church:
This past week our church hit a very significant milestone. A few years ago Glasgow Christian Academy was started as a pre-school. Soon after, we developed a vision for an affordable private Christian School that would run from pre-K through the 8th grade. Well, this past week we graduated our first 8th grade class. It was a moving experience for those of us who birthed this vision. We watched with amazement at the awards ceremony as our kids dazzled us with their accomplishments.
GCA is an exceptional school. We are blessed with Godly teachers, a Godly administration, and especially beautiful families who want the very best for their kids. Often, laboring in a Christian School is painful and thankless. But, I for one do not want to let this year go by without saying a profound thank you to the entire administration and faculty for a job well done. GCA’s enrollment is holding steady for next year – this while so many other private schools in the area have closed their doors due to a lack of enrollment. What makes the difference is quality education. Over the course of any given school year, parents will chastise us for not doing a very good job while others will bless us for doing an exceptional job. But when the surveys came back to us, most families told us how much they love GCA and how satisfied they are with the education of their kids.
This past week at both the awards and graduation ceremonies, what impressed me was the raw emotion of the teachers who clearly are in love with your kids. These Godly men and women truly care about their students and will miss them now that they have graduated. GCA is a great school and you would be wise to enroll your kids. Where else will they receive such a great education and Godly role models who care not only about their academic performance but also about their walk with Jesus?
Sherry Bitler has done a remarkable job stepping back in as our interim principal. No one loves your kids or the school more than she does. Now we must being to pray over the next year for a permanent principal as Sherry considers retirement. God has the person out there for us. We simply need to lean on Christ to give us the wisdom to hire the right person to lead GCA forward into the future. Will you pray for GCA?

Dear Members and Friends of Glasgow Church:
I am pleased to announce that we have hired Mr. Brian Cannelongo to become our director of sports and recreation. I was privileged to see Brian at work throughout the basketball season and especially during last Monday night’s family closing ceremonies. His commitment to the Gospel is intense and he is unashamed of the Good News. He truly sees sports as a means to bring men, women, boys and girls to a saving knowledge of Jesus.
The evident organizational skills Brian brought to the program and the way in which he is respected by the men, most of whom are un-churched or de-churched, was impressive. We are truly blessed to see Brian unleashed to do the work of the ministry. Brian is employed by WSFS and will be working with us on a part-time basis. Be sure to encourage Brian and his precious wife Johanna as they take their first steps in staff ministry.
In His Grip,
PB
